This story is a searing portrait of a country in its formative yet pivotal period. The author aptly describes a moment in which individuals within a nation are morphed from statistics to live fuller, messier, sexier, dumber and quite complex lives. He achieves this through fiction and not social history or some such, thus rendering the story of a people caught in a whirlwind of a country in transition. So interchangeable are the characters lives with ours: this is realist fiction at its most taunting.
