In 1834, Slavery was officially abolished in the British Cape Colony, South Africa. The Boer’s did not support the decision to end slavery. Following the official abolishment of slavery, in 1835 the Boers left the Cape Colony in search for land and slaves. They called their journey The Great Trek and they were the Voortrekkers. Among them was Piet Retief who travelled to Natal with an Afrikaner entourage.
